OUR HISTORY
UWF has its roots in the American Association of University Women (AAUW). AAUW, our parent organization goes back to 1881, its founding year, when a small group of female college graduates banded together to open doors for women’s career advancement and to encourage more women to pursue higher education. Over the years, and continuing to the present time, AAUW has been active in the fight for gender equity and to promote educational opportunities for women.

In 2006, a group of women from the Flagler County branch of AAUW, recognized a need in Flagler County for a local focus dedicated to girls and women in Flagler County. Becoming a local organization allowed for dues and fundraising monies to be spent at the local level. To this end, a new independent organization was founded, the University Women of Flagler.
As of May 2026, UWF has awarded over 133 scholarships to high school graduates in Flagler County, totaling over $230,000. In 2023 UWF created an endowed scholarship at Daytona State College for an older student, aged 22 or older. Non-traditional grants of between $500 and $2,000 are provided to local colleges and programs to assist adults returning to the workforce.
